I think it's time we launched a short film competition on this site. If dave is happy to oversee it, i would happily Judge it and present a trophy at a bizzare location (Maybe on the main drop ((where they photograph you)) on the Log Flume at Alton Towers) Alot of the people who visit the site seem to be in the business of making their own films, so it seems only natural for me to check out your work as you quite clearly have very good taste! We would need a minimum of 10 entries to make it worthwhile, anyone up for it?

I'd be more than happy to oversee and help organise such a competition! Just as long as I get to have a nose through all the short films too! ;D
Anyway, this is the first I've seen of this idea, so there is a long way to go before any final rules are finalised. I prefer the idea of shorts being made for the competition rather than people digging out things they have already made. Not sure how this could be regulated though.... you'd have to have a copy of today's paper in every scene or something! haha
This may even stir me back into making a short film of some kind... of course, I won't be elligible to win anything, but it would be cool to know Shane will have a watch of it! Speaking of which, if the competition kicked off in any big way, then Shane could be left with hours of stuff to sit through! This needs some thought! Restricting the length of the shorts is a start, but there could still be a huge amount of entries (maybe!).

I sir am most certainly in, Im yet to showcase any of my films on the site . . . should we submit them to Dave in vhs/dvd/minidv form or do they have to be on the site?
Also should there be seperate cateogories (spelling) such as documentry, short film etc.
Don't need a best actor or any of that shit, unless you want to!
I dunno, you tell me, Shane and Dave....
Si xx
p.s - I'm digging the Log Flume idea.

Great idea Shane! Is it okay if we enter recently made films or do they have to be brand new. A couple of mates and I made a few films last year, but the bloke who owns the mini-DV cam has moved back to Spain!
The latest film took all of between three and four hours to make in total - it's not as crap as it sounds! ;-)

I'm there, where ever the chuff there is!
This could be sweet. I'll dust the camera down immediately. I haven’t been to Alton Towers in ages!! ;D
Yeah, I agree. I hate it when someone wins a competition or something with a short film they made ages ago, and maybe go funding for. I've seen it quite a few times. It's just not fair, imo.
Maybe the shorts could feature some item or be based around something Shane could suggest?
I think that's the fairest thing to do.

I do like the idea of the shorts being made for the competition (sorry fil).
The theme idea is good one... for example, every film has to be about a box of matches or something! haha
With it being a short film competition for the Shane Meadows website, I think it would be fitting to say that people wouldn't be penalised if their film didn't have professional production values (thus reflecting Shane's early "get out there and do it' attitude). The competition should be more about the films content/story/dialogue rather than asthetics (of course, people would not be penalised for flashy camera shots and professional production values, it's just that the competition wouldn't be about that). Does that make sense? In theory that would mean that even a complete beginner has the potential to win the competition, which can only be a good thing to encourage more people to get involved.
What do you all think about that idea? Feel free to add more ideas to this thread.

Hey folks! Sorry I aint been around much but a 12 week old daughter kind of takes up most of the day when I'm not at work I'm up for a short film comp as the new dvd cam we bought to film our baby's every waking move has made me start filming again, after being chucked out of college 11 years ago, I'm following Tank's Top Tips and doing it D.I.Y. Got a semi feature length homage to Mean Streets planned for our local Carnival this year. Working title Lean Streets ;D See what I did there? Anyway I'll keep checking in when the babe is asleep. Love and Respect. Phill.

I'll see if I can get hold of a camera from somewhere. I'll upload the best of the three films we made last year and post a link in the short films forum. I'm looking forward to this competition - great idea Shane! And congrats Phill!
