Sometimes I think a character like Banjo could have been removed from the film for the better. I know he is explained as a mate of Combo's but I just don't get his hanging around and where he belongs. Meggy is similar, I suppose we know even less about him. They just seem to be loose characters who don't do anything. I don't mean to sound like a nit-picking critic - of course I like the film a lot and am really looking forward to Somers Town. Maybe I just really like films where there are very few characters, like My Summer of Love or A Room for Romeo Brass. I know in previous Meadows films there are these comical characters who we also dislike/empathise with but I find it impossible to like a character like Banjo. Am I wrong on this? I wonder what his role is in the film to some extent. When they're at the BNP meeting there seem to be a few Hells' Angels types there, is Banjo supposed to be from that kind of background? He certainly looks that way. Perhaps I could have an ounce of sympathy for Banjo if I understood something of his background. I know he and Combo were in prison together, but that's it. But when he's holding Shaun back in the scene where Milky gets beaten by Combo, Jesus, that is despicable. It's all in the film.... when Combo first turns up he's with Banjo, and as far as I recall, Combo explains that they were not only mates in prison, but seemed to end up running the place too. This isn't stated explicitly, but from the comments they make, it certainly seems that way. Also, surely Banjo is one of the main people in prison that turned Combo onto the racism too. This of course means that Banjo has been of that mindset for far longer, making him more of a hardcore racist nutjob. As for Meggy, well no, not much is explained about him, which makes him seem like a rather odd chap! haha

I suppose that's very true, it is well explained what's going on. Meggy and Banjo both seem like very odd chaps indeed and that's where my problem lies. Maybe I'm bad at dealing with their very 'oddness' and can't just accept it as is, I need more. Anyway, I've really wandered off the whole point of this thread so I'm sorry for that!
It would be entirely possible to have a whole episode of a TIE series based around Banjo - would be great stuff in my opinion and examine the core of the original film.

I'd rather see a follow up to smalltime - see details under smalltime part of website. Not that This is England wasn't a 10/10 and the first film to make me cry since Dumbo - a moving documentary about animal cruelty. I liked TIE so much I bought some Toots & the Maytals on the way home. I'd like to see Jumbo on "Dragons Den" that would be comedy genius.

I liked TIE so much, I befriended a black person and had a pint of tea.
Okay, half of that's true. I do love my tea.

I'm sure TIE the series would be good - as long as you don't lose the period authenticity and the attention to detail that made it so good.
Saw jumbo recently - says his body is a temple now, mine's still more of an amusement arcade

Cant believe ive missed this thread!! Wat a great idea to follow on from TIE and catch up with all the characters, a sort of where are they now, singleing in on a different character each episode would be great as mentioned.
I really enjoyed Boys from the black stuff, which was a great spin off from the one off play.

I'd be pretty excited about this, but the whole skinhead thing would mostly have to be abandoned wouldnt it? Would be good to see a couple of them moving on to being casuals or something

I can't believe I've only just heard about this! I'd certainly be wanting to watch this, as the film left me wanting more. There were so many unanswered questions and details mentioned in interviews and behind the scenes stuff that sounded like Shane had so much more to say about these characters. It would be great to see Shaun, Milky, Gadget, Lol, Smell, Pukey and Kes etc again and find out what became of Combo. I would dearly love to see Woody again too, but I suppose that Joe Gilgun's Emmerdale contract would preclude that? Especially with him only recently being given time off. No doubt he will be one of the characters sent to Hemel Hempstead... what a shame Should still be great though.

I just found an old Shane article where he discusses the skinhead subculture and how, with all the NF rubbish tarring their name in the early 80's, many skinheads went on to become scooter boys. I'm now very curious to know if any of our old gang will have taken this route by the time of the series? I don't really know anything about scooter boys and so that would certainly interest me to see!
