This is England, this is Nottinghamshire, England 1970’s! The incredible true story of the notorious punk venue the Grey Topper - situated in a Nottinghamshire pit village! Where The Stranglers played in 76, The Vibrators, The Ruts, Early Xerox era Adam and the Ants, The Specials, UK Subs, Angelic Upstarts (that ended in a riot), The Members and more! www.angelfire.com/indie/united11/greytopper.htmlAttachments:

That looks like a good book, will try to get hold of a copy. I sold my old/knackered VW Beetle to a guy who ran a pub in Jacksdale back in the late 1980s. He had turned the place into a theme pub-beach/BBQ etc-and planned to put the car inside. Be interesting to know if it's the same place

Jill that was Woody's 2! I used to go there, it was the same building that had been the Grey Topper! Woody always had grand ideas, the beach thing never really worked, Jacksdale by the sea!? don't think it was a good idea really lol , Club Pit Tropicana ;D

That's a sad story. It's a shame Bertie (yep, it is tragic, but VW Beetle owners really do name their cars) didn't get his retirement on the beach. You do have ponies though-they're a bit like sea-side donkeys....maybe ;D
Looking forward to the book. I've seen some, though not all of those bands at Sandpiper (Nottingham) and elsewhere. Would have been good to see them at the Grey Topper-didn't know it even existed-venues like that are always the best for punk bands.

If i rememberr right there was near on a riot at the Members Gig when they sang The Pistols Anarchy. Also saw Adam Ant at the Sandpiper not bad in those days before he sold out.

Great times The Upstarts gig ended in a full scale riot, a milkman unfortunately stored his bottles at the side of the club that Eastwood lads used as missiles that night, the gang on the receiving end loaded up with fence posts and charged them in retaliation, it was like the English civil war! Adam Ant allegedly had his leather jacket nicked at the Topper and wrote ‘I hate Topper punks’ on the toilet wall. He’s actually back on the road touring early Ant sounds with ‘The Good, The Mad and the lovely Posse’ ;D

There used to be a Venue at Derby i think it was called The Adjanter or something like that now that was a rough place i seem to remember The Upstarts gig thjere ending in a full scale battle. But The Topper was no doubt a scary place and even though i come from Nottingham i always felt like an outsider there. Eastwood/Jacksdale seemed to be like a country on its own stuck in a time warp. (Good Fun though) I loved all those early punk gigs they were so raw and edgy. Scary but not to be missed. By the way i've ordered the Book from Amazon can't wait to get stuck into it.

'kin ell. Is there a common denominator here? I can't help but notice that old marmite face was in attendance at all the gigs where rioting broke out. Who'd have thought it? Its not like he's the type to wind folk up is it? The most drama I ever had at a gig was worrying about being fried to a crisp if a fire broke out at the Sandpiper and the odd bit of fisticuffs after a particularly heavy bout of gobbing..... Edit: Marmite face-were you at that Starjets gig at the Sandpiper on Goose Fair Friday? I think there were about six people there that night (real shame, they were great). Would be spooky if you there

Just curious, do any of you guys still go to punk gigs? Saw the Damned at the Sugarmill in Stoke back in the late 1990s. Also went to see SLF about 6/7 year back in Stourbridge, then soon after at Barrowlands in Glasgow (excellent gig). Undertones at the Birmingham Academy, again about 6 or 7 years ago (loved them-still good without Sharkey). Saw Wedding Present in Leicester a few years back-always feel like a bit of a fraud at post-punk gigs though-not really my era.
Just put the book in my basket on Amazon and, reading the blurb, see that Geno Washington played the Grey Topper-amazing

F.F.S i nearly had to pinch myself , but it's great isn't it how some places just don't move on , it's an area where the land that Time forgot! My mum and dad almost bought a house in Riddings when I was about 10, but the sale fell through-so I grew up in Hyson Green instead. Phew, lucky escape eh?!
Don't knock Codnor Tesco Express-it is the deliverer of late night beer! ;D
I think Chantel's from Codnor? And Sam Beckinsale's from Jacksdale, I believe.
