At last I seem to have stuck to one of the many well respected US TV dramas that I usually can't be bothered getting sucked into.
Just got to the end of the first season of Breaking Bad and it is bloody brilliant. Everyone was correct after all! haha. I hope I don't get dragged into too much US TV because those sods can take over your life with the sheer volume of episodes!

Breaking Bad's excellent. You can take your time with it Dave, because it takes forever for each new series to appear I'm not remotely interested in fishing, so not sure why I've developed a liking for River Monsters (Animal Planet) lately, but I have.

After striking TV gold with Breaking Bad, I thought I'd give another current and well regarded TV series a go.
Game of Thrones.
Barely got through the first episode. Just lame and tedious I thought and I have absolutely no interest to find out if it gets any better.

Just got to the end of season 2 of Breaking Bad!
So great throughout. Plenty of times I found it hard to face the predicaments of the characters simply because I was so invested in them.
However... the very end event of the season. Hmmmm.... the first time throughout the whole thing I thought "This is a coincidence too far isn't it?". Whereas everything prior to this had been really cleverly constructed in terms of storytelling, and often quite awe inspiring in the way things threaded together.... this just felt like something from a different, less talented set of writers.
Anyway, despite that.. still intrigued to see where it all goes in season 3!

Anyway, despite that.. still intrigued to see where it all goes in season 3! I'm struggling to remember what happened at the end of S2 now . My feeling about S3 was that it was a bit of a struggle to maintain the drama-and sympathy-invested in his predicament (guess the writers didn't anticipate an audience wanting more and more...thank goodness for the wonders of medical science eh ). S3 still pretty damn good though ;D I'm a bit out of touch with US TV these days (too busy). I'm told Mad Men is very good-haven't seen it. There's a lot of old stuff for you to catch up on though Dave.....Six Feet Under, Sopranos and, er, that other 5 Series masterpiece that generated a few pages on the site ;D

Nordic Noir
What do you think?
After much persuasion, I watched The Killing and thought it was pretty good. Now my friends are raving about The Bridge, so I loaned the DVDs and watched it. I dunno. Engaging enough, but I just couldn't help thinking that if this was in English-without subtitles- it wouldn't garner such respect. I genuinely think some of the later episodes (series) of Prime Suspect are better. The plotline was daft, stuffed full of -see 'em a mile away red herrings-and impossible/pointless to try to work out anyway, because the beef doesn't arrive until near the end. Making Saga (the best thing in it) shed Demi Mooresque single tears was annoying- totally undermined her character. Am I being mean? Does anybody care? Did anybody even see it? ;D

Sorry if there's a post about this elsewhere.......
Haven't had time to watch anything much lately, but have been hearing good things about In the Line of Duty (Vicky McClure and Martin Compston). It's available on I-player, I think, so will try to catch up on the w/e. Anybody been watching it? What do you think?

I've been watching Line of Duty and I have been really enjoying it. Normally with dramas like this I tend to get a bit bored around the middle set of episodes, but next week is the last episode of the series and I have to say I've always been left feeling like I can't wait to see the next episode! I think the characters are good as well, as there's not one side to each character and the acting is very good too! I can't wait for next week's episode! Obviously, it's just my opinion - let me know what you think if you're going to watch it

Currently 5 episodes in to the 10 i believe of hbo's The Newsroom. I was recommended this by a friend, im usually a Sopranos/The Wire/Boardwalk Empire/Breaking Bad kind of a guy but this has blown me away. Written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeff Daniels who is terrific by the way as a Jeremy Paxman type news anchor and also featuring Emily Mortimer and Dev Patel, this is really well made, intelligent viewing.

Currently trying to catch up with the second series of The Hour (its still good but not great) and I bought Twin Peaks the other day. This is amazing. I know of the dream sequence and how it ends but it hasn't spoiled whats been a damn fine experience so far.
The Sopranos is probably next. Hopefully by the time I've finished 9 series' of that, Mad Men will be finished.

I haven't seen much on the telly this year. Watched The Killing and The Bridge and thought both were pretty good. Still haven't seen S4 of Breaking Bad (shame on me).
I've caught a few episodes of Elementary on Sky Living. Yet another take on Sherlock Holmes. Doesnt get close to the BBC's Sherlock and Lucy Lui's Dr. Watson is a pretty insipid character (not her fault, just lazy writing I think). It's saved by Johnny Lee Miller's performance as Holmes. Aidan Quinn is another recurring character. Wouldn't recommend it especially, but it's a decent way to kill an hour.
The Shield is often recommended to Wire fans. Haven't seen it. Is it any good JT?

I'm watching less and less telly each year. Apart from the BBC News channel and the odd docco nowt much takes my fancy. I always look forward to the Royal Institution Christmas lectures which this year was about chemistry. I didn't think the presenter this time round was a great communicator but it was enjoyable and informative. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/tv/episode/b01pjqpk/I also watched The Girl, which was about Hitchcock's relationship with Tippi Hedren but I thought it was awful. The Beeb just cannot do drama without the results looking stodgy, cheap and being just dull. Would a little bit of cinematography really bust the budget? I watched it to the bitter end but Toby Jones' Hitchcock impression was making me want to hurt kittens. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/tv/episode/p00xjk69/I did enjoy a beautiful Arena docco about Hollywood starlets. Screen Goddesses. A poetic and hypnotic film about a long gone age. Still available for a couple more days on the iPlayer. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/tv/episode/b01pjlhv/
