Just watched the first episode of Derek. Pretty good actually. Karl Pilkington is pretty great in his role as Dougie. Loved his angry speech at the end. Like the pilot episode, it's still a bit over-reliant on piano music (it was Ludovico Einaudi in the pilot, but not sure now) to tell you when to feel sad. Looking forward to see what sort of story arc there is to the full series. Gervais as Derek is still a bit disconcerting, especially as the original incarnation he did of this character years ago definitely seemed far more about laughind at him. People change and ideas develop though, and that clearly isn't the intention any more. Not sure I see the point of the seedy character who just talks filth all the time and is unrealistically preying on women all the time given any opportunity. Doesn't really fit the programme for me.... but no doubt there'll be some story later in the series to give him some more depth. Hope so. Just about agree with all your views Dave (Seedy Guy is not needed) But i have to say i though Ricky Gervais was magnificent as Derek. Loved the pilot loved episode one.

They were real, not much was done in post. Ditto the woodland with the weird sweeping shadows and noises, that was a nearby wind turbine. Lots of speculation online re the identity of the Rabbit and what the hell Russian flu vaccine has got to do with it. The purpose, when revealed, should hopefully be a big holey-fucking-moley moment, but it definitely hides the ball for quite some time. How many farm buildings had you short listed before you found this one? It was perfect and really fitted that graphic novel aesthetic. Like three characters perched on a hill top. Very Spagetti Western... I'm avoiding any hype. I know thare's a big reveal coming but I don't want to accidentally figure it out.

That farmhouse was option 1 of 1. I had driven past it several times before I took a tiny country track and finally saw it from a different angle. Draw a line on a map between Liverpool and Preston then look at every single road or lane or track to the west of that line, and I'll have driven it. Sometimes the only research method is drive drive drive.

Sometimes you do get lucky but there's many many ways to shorten the odds. I use old fashioned maps, google maps, internet research, the land registry and, well, a lot of resources. Armchair scouting, I call it.

Hannibal & Banshee I've reached episode 5 of Hannibal and decided to call it a day, first of all I will say I really like Mads Mikkelsen as Dr Lecter but most of the screen time is occupied by fbi profiler Will Graham and he really gets on my nerves. Its a shame that its so silly as well, which my next show Banshee is but it can get away with it. Catching a complex serial killer every episode and the manner in which it is done cant be taken very seriously. Finding a macabre murder scene of two people carved into angels either side of a bed, Will muses the killer cant sleep so he makes angels to watch over him, err yea I was thinking that Will, helps me everytime!! Banshee is short and sweet and only 10 episodes in length. I'm gutted that it is over but it will be returning for a second season at some point. Its one for the boys really, lots of fighting and gratuitous violence, sex and nudity. Reminded me a little bit of Roadhouse in as much as there's a gangster with a very controlling grip on a small town, that being Banshee. The new sheriff has become so through opportune deception and is actually a jewellery thief released after a 15yr stretch and looking for his former partner and lover. A few familiar faces from The Wire crop up in it too which is always good to see, oh and the main guy Lucas Hood is a proper geezer!!

Broadchurch on BBC America. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out, but in the meantime I'm really enjoying the performances (especially David Tennant and Olivia Colman as the detectives investigating the murder of a young boy)...

Been watching the new seasons of Ripper Street (BBC America) and Portlandia (Independent Film Channel) in the past month or so -- the former has one episode left, and the latter should be getting close to the end as well.

I'm actually interested to see what this Fargo TV series is going to be like.. and I hardly ever have any interest in TV dramas for some reason.

I'm going to use your imdb from now on as a guide of stuff to check out although I've seen most of the projects you've worked on to date.

Have to say Rich everything your usually involved in is decent TV and film. I'm going to use your imdb from now on as a guide of stuff to check out although I've seen most of the projects you've worked on to date. That's because I deliberately avoid putting the howlers on my cv or imdb page! Fortunately these are few and far between as I try to only work on projects where I'm enthused by the script, as working 14-16 hour days for weeks on end is made that much harder if you don't believe in what you're doing. The exception is being called in for a few days or weeks just to help someone else out - if only on a project for a short time there's less need to worry about the quality. Utopia series 2 is locations porn! It is to me anyway but I'm dweebily obsessive about them. From a locations perspective, Utopia is similar to Shane's projects in that I get fantastic amounts of freedom to be creative with the locations, which pleases me greatly. I hope it shows in the finished article.
