I caught The Girl. Didn't think it was awful-was impressed by the attention to detail in the scene reconstructions-but Toby Jones was a bit too creepy even as the famous story behind it, is kind of creepy.

Another January/February, another season of Downton Abbey (on PBS) and Portlandia (on the Independent Film Channel). ;D

Ripper Street, a new series that just started on BBC America this past weekend. I'm liking it so far -- it feels like a cross between Masterpiece Theater and Red Riding Trilogy...

Yeah, just saw the first episode on 4OD and it was engagingly weird. I'll keep watching. The next episode (3) is ultra dark. Some quite tasty locations too Ah ha! Yes very tasty. Where was that lavender field? And where did you find that house with the little window in the wall? The director used that beautifully. I've got a thing about internal windows. Something slightly magical about them. I also really liked that motorway scene. It looked fake but it would've bust the budget to build that from scratch. Was the post box already there? Questions questions questions! ;D

The lavender was added in post! Was a field of carrots I think. All of the flat land stuff was east and north east of Formby nr Liverpool. The house with internal window was near Sefton Park in Liverpool. It wasn't actually requested in the location brief but, well, sometimes you get lucky with these things!
As for the lorry smash, the post box was added by the art dept and yes, the actual hit was green screened. This is a very very long saga involving Lancashire Highways and others, leading to probably my most stressful day on a film set ever. It was Kafka-esque!
I only loc managed the first three eps and if I remember rightly, the best of them are in ep 3.

It all looks great anyway. We're you briefed to find locations that looked like graphic novel panels? I hope you keep a diary. You could have a great book for us all sometime in the future.

Going for graphic novel type locations came into it almost unspoken really. When scouting, I regularly imagined what the locations would look like if they were drawn. It was certainly a different way of going about things. Liverpool (where most of it was shot) does have a lot of good architecture though. Also, I was struck quite early on by the similarity of Arby with Xavier Bardem's character in "No Country for Old Men", so I did have that film in the back of my mind too. The farmhouse, the forest and the remote Scottish Island in episode 3 are ones I'm really looking forward to seeing. The school too, if only to see the results of another exceptionally difficult piece of locations work.
As for a book, hmm, not sure what I do would sustain much more than an essay really...

Just watched the first episode of Derek.
Pretty good actually. Karl Pilkington is pretty great in his role as Dougie. Loved his angry speech at the end. Like the pilot episode, it's still a bit over-reliant on piano music (it was Ludovico Einaudi in the pilot, but not sure now) to tell you when to feel sad. Looking forward to see what sort of story arc there is to the full series. Gervais as Derek is still a bit disconcerting, especially as the original incarnation he did of this character years ago definitely seemed far more about laughind at him. People change and ideas develop though, and that clearly isn't the intention any more. Not sure I see the point of the seedy character who just talks filth all the time and is unrealistically preying on women all the time given any opportunity. Doesn't really fit the programme for me.... but no doubt there'll be some story later in the series to give him some more depth. Hope so.

Why don't they just switch off!? It looks great and is beguiling. But it's violence does leave me feeling queasy though and it reminds that I'm not the blood thirsty 13 year old I used to be! Those three farm building on the horizon, RichK, was that a real location or was that a mix of real and post?

They were real, not much was done in post. Ditto the woodland with the weird sweeping shadows and noises, that was a nearby wind turbine.
Lots of speculation online re the identity of the Rabbit and what the hell Russian flu vaccine has got to do with it. The purpose, when revealed, should hopefully be a big holey-fucking-moley moment, but it definitely hides the ball for quite some time.
