Sometimes is nice to sit back and watch cloying, sentimental crap. I tend to watch a lot of genre films and am a huge lover of Italian exploitation films of the seventies. Amelie is a nice little antidote. And as Miss Donk rightly says, it’s a beautifully shot film, too…

Hollywood comes out with so much cloying sentimental crap, yet Amelie is the absolute zenith of cloying sentimental crap, a love story, beautifully told, essentially about two fuck-ups & not Meg Ryan or Tom Hanks.
The bit in the cafe where she just melts...
Has anyone seen the tit and the moon, meant to be really good.
Oh, and No Mans Land to add to the list

As much as I love French movies a friend of mine is totally into Asian cinema, and he's opened my eyes too some fantastic movies over the last couple of years. Infact Oldboy went straight into my top ten of all time the minute it ended! A few others he lent me which blew me away are
Spring Summer Autumn Winter Spring The Isle 3 Iron all by Kim Ki Duk
Audition Dumplings R Point Twilight Samurai 2046
Infact all of Park Chan Wook's films are terrific and I think he really is a major new voice in world cinema. As well as Oldboy which is the middle film in his trilogy of vengence, I can highly recommend the first and third parts Sympathy For Mr Vengance and Lady Vengence. Check out JSA as well.

Well I'm a big fan of Takashi Miike and Park Chan-Wook and recommend the film "THE THREE EXTREMES" Which includes a 40 minute short "Box" by Miike and "Cut" by Wook as well as a 40 minute version of "Dumplings"
AUDITION - MIIKE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKUARIS - MIIKE SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGENCE - WOOK OLD BOY - WOOK THE KILLING WORDS - SPAIN SWITCHBLADE ROMANCE - FRANCE THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE - DEL TORO THE 400 BLOWS - TRUFFOUT MAN BITES DOG - BELGIUM TRILOGY - BELGIUM
I'm sure there are loads more, just cant think right now. The French New Wave's quite good, Truffout, Goddard etc

Oldboy is in my top ten aswell Phill. I love it. Have you seen his new one then Phill? Sympathy for Lady Vengence? I am waiting for it to come out at the cinema somewhere near me but I doubt that will ever happen. Haha! It will be out on DVD first probably. Man Bites Dog is also a brilliant film. And how could I forget Switchblade Romance?! There are so many! I will be adding to my list for the next month I bet.

Whether you think it was cloying, sentimental crap you have to admit that cinematically it is a beautiful film. Sure it looks good but the last hour could have been an advert for a box of chocolates! It's all too smoochy and heavy-handed for my liking. You can't help what you like/don't like eh. It seems at lot of you are only mentioning modern cinema which is a crying shame. Some of the best films I've ever seen pre-date me. Stick your neck out.

Companero - I didn't mean everyone, just the majority. Good call on Herzog. You seen Grizzly Man yet?

The company that released it, Revolver is quite a small outfit, so it’s probably only play the big cities. Anyone in London can see it in Islington. I bought the R1 DVD – it’s been out since before Christmas.
