I didn't like Shoot 'Em Up either. I watched it simply because I felt like watching Paul Giamatti, and the only movies we had left inthe store with him in it that I hadn't seen was that and Lady in the Water (and oh boy, am I not ready for another bad Shyamalan), so Shoot 'Em Up it was. And oh boy was that bad. The carrot stuff was funny, but not enough to save that stinker.
OK, so I'm going to check out this Crank duo of films (beware of Mike Patton in the movies hahahah!! Seen "Firecracker" yet?? But I'm glad he's doing soundtracks! He really should! Hell, I should too!!!) and then continue in the discussion. Of course, I've seen "Gamer"...that I can babble about.

I have been intrigued by Firecracker but haven't seen it. So it's pretty bad then? If you still need convincing that you should see Crank 1 and 2, then let Mike Patton recommend it while he talks about composing the Crank 2 soundtrack!

Oh lord, "Firecracker". Even though Mike Patton was the best thing about it, he couldn't save it. It just tries so hard to be Lynch-weird that it goes way beyond it into utter nonsense. And so badly acted... I wish I could say it's so bad it's brilliant, but it just shot itself in the face one time too many.
There was some underground hype about it while it was being made, and they launched this website where you'd log in, and they'd drop clues and you'd follow trails to try and solve the crime (not like the Saw website, though). But the website was creepier than the movie, frankly.
Nah, Steve Balderson needs to calm down.
Have you ever seen discussions about movies or music onthe net, and people throw the word "pretentious" around willy-nilly, when all they want to do in intellectually insult something they don't simply don't like. It's their way of dismissing it. Which isn't the same thing, so I hardly ever use that word, and definitely don't drop it without beaing aware of what it really means. I'm afraid I'm going to have to use it here. With deep regret.
(edit: OOooh, I forgot to say thanks for the link! I'm going to get to it as soon as I finish this new Alice in Chains album. I'm listening to it right now for the first time, and I can't interrupt it. Not a first listening. Especially since I have to get the flow of them without Layne Staley.)
...yet another addition!: All that being said about "Firecracker"...I don't hold it against him or anything (I'm not trying to be mean),and I'll watch his next movie. Without prejudice. He made a movie, and with me it bombed. Mike Patton fan and all. He says he wasn't influenced by Lynch (really?), but please, by all means, watch it and tell me if I'm just not seeing the brilliance and need to rewatch it or if I actually am stating that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes.

If you still need convincing that you should see Crank 1 and 2, then let Mike Patton recommend it while he talks about composing the Crank 2 soundtrack! Ok, sold! I'm working tomorrow, and Sunday double...I'm taking both home with me so that on Monday I'll just watch the one after the other. Say, that part where he talks about using a Speak & Spell? I know this drummer, and I honestly think he's the best drummer ever to walk Scandinavias face...possibly even the world... and he does these improv shows with a guy he grew up with, who's blind since birth, and is this genius keyboard player. And Morgan (Ågren, the drummer), sometimes plays with one hand (complicated stuff too), and picks up his son's Speak & Spell, and tries to operate it with one hand, so of course the electronic voice is saying that he's wrong...and the whole effect is just soooo fucked up. You really have to be prepared to see Mats & Morgan live, because your brain will hurt.

Result! Another person convinced to watch the Crank films! ;D
I will not provide refunds!
Watching them one after the other will work brilliantly because 2 carries on directly from the end of 1!
I like a good bit of experimental music... speak and spell using drummer sounds interesting.

And he's such a sweet, calm person when you meet him. In Sweden, you practically stumble over musicians and I'm so accustoemd to it that I don't suffer from foot-in-mouth syndrome or collapse into a dribbling, fawning mess when I meet someone whose work really made an impact on me (I've met Mike Patton twice, and greeted him like he was the dude I see drinking coffee at the corner café every other morning), but Morgan...oh boy. I used to work part time at the coolest little vinyl collectors shop in Stockholm (before it closed down), and the store was in charge of sending out everything ordered from Morgan's site, so he'd be in every now and then, and call sometimes. And if I was around, I'd get brainfreeze, smile like an idiot and say something super intelligent like, oh I dunno..."second comes after first", or something of that calibre. *deep sigh* Right, a Crank marathon it will be (hope it hasn't been rented out because then I have to wait, and dammit, I've made PLANS now!!!). Oh! And I'm collecting my Le Donk DVD on Monday, so I'll be all a-flap anywya. Might even clean the apartment and buy some wine and make a big deal out of it. ;D My boyfriend's away on tour, so it's just me and the cats.

LoveFilm have finally decided to send me the Blu Ray of Crank 2... I will report back with my findings. Hopefully the rental version isn't 'gimped'..... as in, doesn't have all the extra features. You have to plan time to re-watch with the High Voltage commentary track on! Features even more behind the scenes snippets at appropriate moments. You can also find out whether you find Neveldine & Taylor interesting and amusing or just plain annoying! ;D

If you didn't manage to work out the web address of their new website, it is; www.neveldinetaylor.comPay a little visit and leave a message on the messageboard. I am BlueCrayon77 on there. Is Torture Puppy you Tash? haha Why would I think such a thing!? If anyone else thinks it would be funny for the Neveldine/Taylor message board to have a peculiar influx of Shane Meadows fans, then please do join me! ;D We can confuse the crazy duo by revealing a strange fanbase that covers both Meadows... and mayhem!

Is Torture Puppy you Tash? haha Why would I think such a thing!? Hahah!!! naw, 'snot me. I tend to use my own name (or the shortened version)...unless it's taken. Only then do I put on my pseudonym cap. Torture Puppy does sound a bit like me though.... ;D Oh, by the way, I saw Crank, but Crank 2 was out (still is)... I was impressed by the music choice in Crank, I recognised almost everything (GREAT that they started with a Refused song...what a band THAT was!). But it was certainly an over-the-top movie. I didn't like it all the time, but parts were definitely warped enough to tickle my chin. All that being said, I think could have lived without seeing Jason Statham's bum.

Oooo! Neveldine & Taylor have started a YouTube channel and they put up one of my favourite little bits from the Crank 2 DVD/BluRay about the likelihood of Crank 3. Brilliant! They have also been favouriting plenty of videos related to their work. One video is surprisingly brilliant Crank parody. A trailer for Crank 3. Pity I didn't spot it in time for xmas!

For the sake of continuity, I thought it best if I respond to your post in here, Dave... Just watched GAMER - an hour and a half of complete and utter crap (read: unabashed fun). I really enjoyed it. Please be kind. Please make your way to the Neveldine/Taylor thread: shanemeadows.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=film&action=display&thread=3146&page=1I agree with your review. I saw it in the cinema, and have just got the blu-ray because I am very interested in the Neveldine/Taylor working method. I think you would find it interesting too Companero, and they have so far always put in extra effort to their blu-ray discs. On the Gamer blu-ray they have a feature length making-of documentary (80 minutes). They also have a number of scenes which are discussed individually by different members of the crew, such as art department, stunt co-ordinators, effects team, composers, editors. I've not actually seen any of that yet, but I have seen their nice 'Icon' mode commentary style thing. It's kind of like a commentary, but the actually stroll on screen to talk about stuff. They also rewind and pause and high-light things of interest... this means the Icon mode runs at 2hours 12mins... whereas the film is only 1hour 40mins. There's plenty of interesting stuff in there. They are fanatics of doing as much as possible in-camera, so it's always great to see real stunts being shot. One bit I wasn't ready for however was a behind the glimpse peek at the 'skin-hangers'. In the rave scene there are some people hung up by their skin on hooks and swinging about, remember? Well I presumed special effects, or make-up... but no! They were the real deal. The behind the scenes footage of them impaling themselves with hooks is a real shocker! haha Got to love Neveldine's comments on shooting this bit; "I remember rollerblading underneath them with the camera and blood was dripping down on to me" "You know it's been a good days filming when you have to take a hepatitis test at the end of the day." Oh, the blu-ray also has a different normal commentary too! Can't wait to dig in to the rest of the extras! What I enjoyed about GAMER was just how unapologetic it is/the filmmakers are. It really is a film that appeals to the lowest common denominator (gory killings, topless girls running rampant, etc) but I think in these over PC times we live in, there's something really refreshing and retro about that. I think most of today’s mainstream films (particularly the big budget action stuff) just looks neutered (and usually is in order to for the greedy studios to secure that much-coveted PG-13/12A rating) so when something like a CRANK or a GAMER comes along, it’s a breath of fresh air. I know that GAMER’s not as subversive as the CRANK films but there’s still a fair bit going on under the surface too.

I know that GAMER’s not as subversive as the CRANK films but there’s still a fair bit going on under the surface too. Oh dear, you poor, poor people! Shhhhh! Anyway..... yes Companero, I too enjoy their unashamed, brazen un-PCness. It is very unusual these days for film-makers or companies not to pander to the more teen friendly certificates. Speaking of which, there's a fun bit that was cut from the film which they show in the Icon commentary mode. It's a mad faux advertisement for a mental service called Frag n' Shag. As you can imagine... plenty of semi-naked women larking with guns of various sizes. Apparently the film company thought it was a bit too much, so they advised them to take it out. Shame, because when they show you how they would have edited it into the film, it works much better than the final edit of the film which doesn't feature it. The commercial has a real Robocop/Starship Troopers feel to it which I think Gamer would have been improved by if there had been a few of them scattered through the film. Shame that not even the one they did make made the final cut.

I had no idea about the ad Dave but I was constantly thinking of the verhoeven flicks you mention when I was watching GAMER anyway. I think the film is far better than people are giving it credit.
