Just thought I'd quickly start a thread where everyone can discuss This Is England '86 without worrying about labelling spoilers...
...THIS WHOLE THREAD IS GOING TO BE FULL OF SPOILERS, so steer well clear if you want to remain untainted by the knowledge of others!
Having said that, please only discuss the episodes which have been broadcast. If you have somehow been lucky enough to see episodes before broadcast, then keep quiet! ;D
Right, time for beddy byes.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT!!!!
The opening scene was fucking mind blowing, (simple use of a deleted scene and I'm hooked. Thrifty too) and the episode went up hill from there.
Tuesdays can't come any quicker!

What an excellent start - perfect continuation of an excellent film, and everything we've come to expect from one of Shane's projects was present and correct. Can't wait to see how it pans out. Digging a little deeper - the scene in which Tommo is forced to go to the girl's house to call her a fat pig was genius: by turns hilarious and uncomfortable to watch. It's great to see some of the character that had little screentime in the movie being given more to do in the series. Definitely the best thing on TV this year so far

A huge choice of TIE'86 threads to post my thoughts on. ;D I'll choose this one as I can spoil freely...
Seeing it the second time round with ad breaks was revealing. The narrative had been written with the ad breaks built in so each section between the breaks was like an episode in itself. I wonder what it was like to have to work in a cliff-hanger of sorts every 15 to 20 mins or so. This is one of the many aspects of TV drama that can make it less appealing to me than a film written with the cinema screen in mind.
Saying that if I'm going to watch a TV drama then one from the house of Meadows will do more than just nicely. I've never seen Shameless or Skins so I'm free of any auto-comparing (comments elsewhere on the net are comparing this to them) so TIE'86 looked very fresh, very cinematic and very high quality. Confident and aiming high with filmic artfulness used to great effect such as that final montage. TV drama, what I see of it, can be a bit rushed and bit high energy so these moments of contemplation worked well in pacing it more cinematically.
I love the opening. A moment of high genius. Took my breath away. Was that an, 'I know! ..." moment or was it always in the back of someone's head? That edit is up there with 2001's famous 'thrown bone to orbiting space bomber' jump-cut.
I thought the Flip character was hilarious if a bit cartoony but then there are people who adopt those kind of growling hardman masks 24/7.
Vicky McClure was amazing. Her eyes say an enormous about. As well as being enormous. I nearly started welling up while Lol looked at Woody, waiting for the 'I do.'
I don't watch much TV drama as I'm put off by a great many things but this is safe. This is quality. This Is England '86! Sorry that just came out. ;D I meant it though.
Oh I popped into HMV yesterday and the TIE'86 DVD is due out on October 11 according to their puter.

does anyone know the name of the actress who plays lol's mom or what she has been in before??? its really annoying me now! No! Oddly, the cast list on imdb only includes about 4 recurring characters. Couple of people have said there were no credits, but the credits were at the beginning-longishg list which flashed by too quickly for me to absorb, so again not sure if it was the full cast. Imdb has answered a question for me. I was curious to see Johnny Harris among the photos from the BFI preview. Thought he was excellent in London to Brighton and was hoping he was actually in TIE and not just a ligger at the party He is a recurring character apparently!

I've never seen Shameless or Skins so I'm free of any auto-comparing (comments elsewhere on the net are comparing this to them) quote] I've never seen Skins Chromebaby. Its written by different people and is also a bit of a showcase for new writing talent. From what I can gather, the quality varies between superb and meh. You should definitely check out Shameless though-especially the first two seasons. Shameless is also written by different people now and I haven't kept up at all (just too busy for a lot of TV), so not sure where its at these days, but the early stuff written by creator Paul Abbot is great.

Just watched the show after finishing work off nights and enjoyed it very much. Sometimes spin off shows from films feel different, having a different vibe, sort displaced, but the opening scene really brought the show in together from the film and connected very well. Look forward to the next episode, i wonder what will happen next? Banjo seems to have got very well in with the gang since Combo's departure, which i find strange given that he seemed the most racist and didnt stop Combo attacking milky at the time. Will there be any back explaination to this and his sudden change in character? and where is Pukey, i thought he was very good friends with Woody, some mate he is, missing the wedding!!
Back the the opening scene again was this a deleted scene from the film put into the show or has it been worked with stepham Graham filming new footage against Thomas Turgoose old footage?
anyway finishing off here my prediction for next weeks episode is i think Meggy is gonna croak it and Shaun will reunite with the gang. What does everyone else think.

I've been wracking my brains about the opening, my initial thought is that of course it was a deleted scene, but the film had a very different look to the series, and the opening scene had the same look as the series.
Im not sure exactly what they shot the series on, but it looks alot like what they shot Red Riding on which was the Arricam LT (which is a very crisp 35mm image) vs the very grainy 16mm they shot the film on.
Any ideas???

Any ideas??? it was shot on RED's I didnt think it was a deleted scene either I'll have to see it again, one thing I really noticed in that opening scene was Tomo carried himself with a lot more confidence when he was walking away from Combos car he had an older walk to the kid who made his way down to the beach at the end of the film.
