Hi, Just wondering if any of you very film literate people know anything about Lynne Ramsey's forthcoming film The Lovely Bones? Loved Ratcatcher (Thought Movern Callar was OK) and really looking forward to this one. It's been advertsied as 'upcoming' for (seemingly) eons, but no release date as yet. Anybody got any info? Thanks, Jill Yeah Lynne Ramsy did own the rights but Mr Jackson, desperately wanted to make it so he made her an offer she couldnt refuse

28 Weeks Later could be interesting. It's a different director and (pretty decent) cast. The guy who wrote Last Resort co-wrote the screenplay. I'm thinking by the looks of it, it's going to show a different group of people and how they were affected by what happened in the first film, but a little bit later on, a la The Romero quadrilogy. Yeah, the director did Intacto which is infacto pretty great

Hiya,
Seems Channel Four owned the rights to Lovely Bones, not Lynne Ramsey (who was originally commissioned to make it) and sold the rights to get out of some sort of financial hole. Pity.
I don't know much about Jackson. Seen Lord of the Rings, but none of the (shock) horror stuff. Not sure I want to-Slicing off faces? Lawnmowers? Pulpy messes? Kind of thing I should be making a point of telling people-proudly-that I missed :-) Convince me I'm wrong!!
I say 'pity' because I think Lovely Bones is/would be very tricky to translate onto the big screen. A dark, deeply sad story that is told through the eyes of a child (no spoilers). The book has a strange, hard to pin down, innocent quality about it. Thought Lynne Ramsey would make a good job of it because Ratcatcher has many of the same qualities: the film begins with a very dark moment/incident and then unfolds into a sort of 'observation' (not really a story in the conventional sense) of life in the aftermath; told through the eyes of a child. If you haven't seen this film, you should try to get hold of a copy-it's really beautiful.
Bit disappointed by Morvern Callar. Why did you think it was briiliant? I know it's an 'experimental' film-maybe I'm just too much of insensible pleb-but I sort of thought that the opening 20 minutes was amazing and then it just lost its way.....

Jill, you really must check out Jackson's HEAVENLY CREATURES - it's unlike anything lse he has ever made; very low-key and character driven. To say anymore would ruin it, just make sure you seek it out.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley is out on monday shall I pick it up? Hyde, KING KONG was over-long at 3hrs - can you imagine another 15 minutes? It's not that it was a bad film, it's spectacular in places, but it could have definitel done with some pruning. Those new LORD OF THE RINGS discs include both the theatrical and extended versions of the films, with very minimal extras. If you ahve the extended cuts aleady, give them a miss, mate. As for THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY and I know I've said it before and I'm loathed to say it again because there's at least three forum members from his home town on these boards, but I have a massive problem with Ken Loach. I love his earlier films such as KES and CATHY COME HOME, but I found most t of later films (admittedly, I've not seen all of them) emotionallyheavy-handed. I'm sure MarkSherbert and Miss Donk saw it and raved though...

Yeah Comp it really was long wasnt, the thing was, the parts in the island just came and went and I doubt I could watch it again and not switch it off once they leave the island. If the added 15 mins add a good amount more to the part of the island then I'll definately give it a rent.
I really couldnt be arsed with the extended dvd's of LOTR... the films arent worth spending another 20 quid for more of it. Who could honestly sit and watch a film like that, that you've seen, for even longer.. nah... theres films I would but LOTR arent one of them.
Hmm... that surprised me that! I love Kes, and I liked Sweet Sixteen (flawed but better than say kidulthood) I havnt seen a trailer for TWTSTB only seen the dvd cover and it looks interesting. I know nothing of the politics of that war or anything, but I was thinking seeing as he makes good films this must be to. I think I will check it out though... unless I'm told its really boring.

"Hooray for Peter Jackson!" I say.
Blimey people.... if you haven't seen Heavenly Creatures by Mr Jackson, I'm sure your opinion of him will change dramatically. Whether you already like him, or you don't, I'm confident that seeing Heavenly Creatures will send him up in your estimation. Heavenly Creatures was the first film of his that I watched. After seeing it, I of course wanted to find out about his earlier films! Ha ha what a grisly surprise to find his trail of gore smeared out behind him. For me, finding out that he had been a gore-fiend made me smile a lot!
Jill... if you're not into gore, or you're sqeamish, then it's probably best to steer clear, but otherwise his early films need to be seen. Bad Taste was a self financed project aided by family and friends, that took over 4 years to make (they could only film at weekends because the main friends involved worked at the post sorting office all week). Full of hugely impressive home-made effects and prosthetics, it's an amateur film-making master class! His directorial talent is very much in evidence too. Ingenius camera useage throughout... including the use of a home made steadicam(!) and a homemade camera crane! Meet the Feebles is a bizarre puppet film. I always feel it's like a bit of film-making experiment, and not entirely sucessful. Even though it's puppets, it's still pretty gross and gory. Very much a cult film. Braindead!! The best gore film ever?? In my opinion yes! Definitely the goriest film I've ever seen.... but genuinely funny and inventive with it. It's not lame Hollywood style 'gags' either. Braindead is the film I most want to see a 'making-of' documentary about.
Mr Jackson hasn't made a bad film in my opinion.
But back to The Lovely Bones.... you must watch Jackson's Heavenly Creatures.... I'm pretty sure you'll see he's more than up to the job.

Hiya,
OK, you've all suceeded in selling this man to me! Was going to wait until the end of the month, but I'll pop along to the Bullring tomorrow and pick up a copy of Heavenly Creatures. I'm not especially squeamish-loved Scream, hate Nightmare on Elmstreet- try to keep an open mind about things as a rule-but generally don't like horror (apart from Frankenstein, but-of course-that's a wholely different animal-pardom the cheap joke!) These here horror movies sound intriguing (can hear Henry saying 'how many killings?') and your (Dave) account of Bad Taste reminds me of that fantastic documentary American Movie (don't know if you know this, but it's about this completely weird/bonkers, but totally engaging guy's single minded, obsessional quest to make a horror flick- all family/friends get roped into the enterprise-hilarious). I'll see if I can get hold of one of them. Crikey, it is late-should go to bed now. Jill

American Movie, wow that takes me back! saw it years ago on TV and thought it was brilliant.
My favourite Jackson film has got to be Bad Taste! Perfect 10/10 from me.
